HEART - EDGE

HEART

Serving students from kindergarten to sixth grade, the grant-based HEART Program offers a high-quality learning environment that supports day school goals through experiential learning opportunities.

EDGE

EDGE provides an exciting learning environment to middle school students that stimulates academic achievement through vertically aligned pathway programs.

Our programs are offered at no cost to families and provides a positive environment for their children from the time school ends until 6:00pm every day school is in session.

Pathways

Based on a Pathway approach that begins in kindergarten and continues through high school, the activities we offer are age-appropriate, project-based, and forward-looking. They are designed to expand our students’ awareness of possibilities, provide them with hands-on/minds on learning experiences that engage them in projects of relevance beyond what they may be experiencing in classrooms during the school day, and help them see themselves as capable, confident learners who can excel in a variety of fields. Pathways are vertically aligned across primary and secondary education Common Core State Standards and 21st Century Learning Skills.
  • Computer Science and Engineering includes eight-week coding, robotics, and machine building projects and introduces students to occupations and professions in technology, information management, and software development.

  • Health Sciences focuses on sports, culinary arts, human anatomy, and biology.

  • Agriculture and Environmental Science includes projects that are especially relevant to the Central Valley, such as water and soil conservation, gardening, composting, and recycling.

  • Performing and Visual Arts exposes students to digital media, sculpture, creative theater, dance, and music.

Off-site learning experiences are integrated into these Pathways and projects conclude with culminating events, which gives students a chance to showcase what they have learned to their friends, families and community members.

Health

Our vision is for all our students to be healthy and fit. We promote healthy behaviors in nutrition and physical activity that encourage students to adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles by embedding healthy practices throughout our program rather than offering them independently. Our Pathway approach promotes nutrition education and physical activity by integrating healthy practices into our Project-Based Learning experiences.
  • Physical Activity - All children engage in structured physical activity for 60 minutes each day through a combination of student-led Energize Up! Activities, circuit training, SPARK, and brain breaks (short bursts of physical activity during more sedentary program components such as coding, art and homework). Students rotate through eight-week Project-based Learning classes that include Sports and Health, Movement and Dance, Culinary Arts, Gardening, and Yoga.
  • Nutrition - We provide all students with a healthy, nutritious meal through the USDA-funded Child and Adult Care Food Program. Table Talk teaches students the importance of healthy eating, the nutritional value of the foods and beverages they have consumed, and the relationship of these to their health. Our culinary arts projects link nutrition, economics, language development, and health as students prepare healthy snacks, learn how to shop on a budget, grow fruits and vegetables in our garden, and create and publish recipe books. Students are reminded of the importance of a balanced, healthy diet based on My Plate (the current USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion nutrition guide).

21st Century Skill Development

We reinforce what our students are learning during the day school by aligning our approaches with our schools’ goals and priorities. ProYouth supports students’ growth as 21st Century Leaders. Our programs challenge students to become collaborators, critical thinkers, and leaders in their communities. Our focus is on helping our students develop and master these skills through cross-disciplinary experiences that build on their prior knowledge and make learning real, relevant and exciting. Our Project-based Learning approach offers a variety of ways for children to work collaboratively to address and solve real-world problems and create new knowledge on their own. Students have ongoing opportunities to develop and strengthen their communication skills. Our approach to collaboration reinforces this; we structure activities in a way that encourages students to work together and think together. Our Project-based Learning approach builds their capacity to review their assumptions through research and experimentation, link, decisions with consequences, and recognize how things fit together in ways that are either logical and defensible or not.

Embedded Program Support

  • Social-Emotional Learning - We are committed to meeting the developmental, social-emotional and physical needs of all our students. We embed social-emotional learning in our core values, strategic planning, staff development and project-based curriculum design. Our staff are trained in the ages and stages of child development, Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS), and Second STEP (research-based skills for learning, empathy, emotion management and problem solving).
  • Leadership Development - Student voice is at the core of our student-centered approach to learning and a vehicle for ensuring that the opportunities we offer are exciting, engaging and meaningful. Our staff provides these opportunities by: 1) giving children choices when they are participating in program activities, 2) sharing leadership roles and responsibilities with them, and 3) making sure that they feel connected and empowered, rather than managed or monitored. Service-learning is integrated into Pathways, with students applying what they learn through community service.
  • Literacy - The ProYouth Literacy Development Program is a targeted eight-week intervention that supports students in grades one through three who are reading below grade level. Our Literacy Aides administer pre-assessments to determine the child’s strengths and needs. Students are supported through small group intervention where they practice reading out loud, receive coaching, and engage in activities to help build comprehension.
